Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? How do you define emotional capital? You must also respond to a minimum of two other students’ blog posts.https://sloanreview.mit.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/735298261f.pdfReply 1: Rachel BelletThe authors argue that the main reason some social media initiatives fail to bring benefits to companies is because the initiatives do not create emotional capital, which they define as a strong emotional connection between stakeholders and the company. So, why would the owners of a company not treat their “money makers” with respect?https://www.azquotes.com/author/10528-Anne_M_MulcahyEmotional capital, or “the aggregate feelings of goodwill toward a company and the way it operates” (Huy, Shipilov), is an important aspect of having a successful business. If owners and management don’t take the time and listen to the issues and complaints from the employees, they will have low efficiency and high turnover rates. A little over a year ago I worked for a spine clinic as a receptionist for around six months. Those six months were filled with low morale, crazy high turnover and micro-managing. The employees were always blamed for the issues that arose, when it was really the management that needed to be fixed. In the six months I worked there I saw 11 employees leave, with me being the 12th, due to lack of respect, being taken advantaged of and management always needing to find something to complain about.Management was power hungry and because of this, it became a power contest between the employees to see who has at the top and bottom of the totem pole. The team did not work well together and there was no trust anywhere. They tried to make it seem like they cared about their employees and respected everyone equally, but then they would talk down to employees, not give them work to do because they didn’t trust them, and get mad when a mistake was made that was never taught. What is even worse, is that the owner of the company had no idea what was going on with the administrative employees, since he only really spoke with management. We don’t know what was ever said between them and don’t know if he Is actually aware of the problems. If the management gave respect to their employees, they would not only still have hard working workers, but would receive the same respect back. However, since they don’t do this the morale is in the dumps. Based on my experience at the company, there was no authenticity, no pride, absolutely no attachment and no fun. While this company needs internal communication, it would be pointless because the management does not actually care about the people they hired and their feelings and would not make changes to make things better. Even though the clinic helped patients with spine and body problems, they didn’t care about their administrative employees and, in the end, seemed to only care about money and their level of power.“Emotional capital with its employees can be built by the actions of executives; it represents the emotion-based assets that the organization has developed over time with its employees” (Huy, Shipilov). Even though I was only with that company for six months, I don’t believe there was any emotional capital. Based on my experience I have to agree with the statement. To me, emotional capital is about equal respect between the business and the employees. Employees aren’t going to give respect to a company that doesn’t respect them in return. Without equality, trust and honesty, emotional capital will be pointless for the business.Reply 2: Joseph DamoraEmotional capital is the process of creating a bond with your consumer that is stronger than just your product, they have faith in your company and have a deep trust in your products as time goes on. One of the most important parts of a social media marketing campaign is building emotional capital. Most social media campaigns fail because of failing to establish emotional capital between the stakeholder and the company. Creating sales is an extremely important to a campaign, but so many marketers fail to focus on building the emotional capital. A strong emotional connection between the customer and the company does a lot more than get you one sale, it gets you a customer for life.“The authenticity of an organization (or of the leaders of a social media community) isprobably the most critical pillar of emotional capital.” (Huy, Shipilov, 2012) Making sure that you are authentic with your consumer base may weed out some potential customers, but it will help develop emotional capital with the customers you receive. Being authentic is not about going out of your way to do more then needed, but it is about being true to your customers. A great example that just happened in recent memory is when the Covid 19 hit and many NFL teams donated to their city’s relief fund. This shows the fans that they actually care about the city where they play football. This can build a more authentic relationships with the team and the fans.ReferencesLHuy, Q. Shipilov, A.
